Conventional motor oils are made from crude oil which has been is pumped from the ground and then processed in a refinery to create a base oil. Additives are then mixed into the base oil to change the viscosity, protection properties and heat breakdown levels of the oil.

Synthetic oil is also created in a similar manner to a conventional engine oil, using a base oil combined with a series of additives. The difference lies in the fact that synthetic motor oils are created utilizing a specially “synthesized” base oil where the size of the oil molecules are all of an ideal weight and of a consistent size. A fully synthetic oil is made to provide a much purer base oil, with less waxes and with a uniform ideal particle size to help increase the oils viscosity level. With their improved viscosity index, true synthetic oils need little or no viscosity index improvers, which are the oil components most vulnerable to thermal and mechanical degradation as the oil ages, and thus they do not degrade as quickly as traditional motor oils.

When deciding which type of motor oil to use for a vehicle, it’s always best to refer to the manufacturer’s recommendations. Some consumers feel that since synthetic oil is more expensive, it’s better for their car. This is not always the case.  Not every engine needs synthetic motor oil.  In fact, there may be some features that your car’s engine needs that the synthetics don’t have.

Led by third-year quarterback Dennis Dixon, making only the second start of his career, the Steelers remained strong and composed against the Atlanta Falcons. Even after they failed to score a field goal with 39 seconds left in regulation. Luckily for the Steelers, RB Rashard Mendenhall carried the load with a 50-yard touchdown run in overtime, driving Pittsburgh to a 15-9 victory.

Breaston’s hustle prevents Rams TD

Arizona Cardinals WR Steve Breaston’s never-give-up attitude stopped the St. Louis Rams from scoring a game-changing touchdown on Sunday. In the middle of the third quarter, Rams DT Clifton Ryan scooped up a fumble by Cardinals QB Derek Anderson and ran towards the end zone. But Breaston spotted the turnover from about 15 yards away, turned on the jets, and caught Ryan at the 5, stripping him and allowing Arizona to recover in the end zone for a touchback. The Cardinals used that momentum to deliver a 17-13 victory, thanks to Breaston, who also had seven receptions for a career-high 132 yards.

General Motors announced that GMC Terrain sales are continuing at a rapid pace as it enters its second model year. GM said that in the first seven months of 2010, the Terrain has consistently taken a speedy 13 days to turn on dealer lots. The rest of the compact SUV segment usually takes 28 days and  51 days for all vehicles.

“We’ve had an outstanding response to the Terrain since it launched last Fall,” said Lisa Hutchinson, GMC Product Marketing Director. “The Terrain is attracting new buyers to the brand who are looking for an SUV that offers fuel economy, exterior and interior styling, quality and safety that maintain GMC’s reputation for engineering excellence.”

GM also said that the Terrain appeals to women more than any other GMC product, which is pretty obvious since GMC is not really known for making female oriented vehicles. Approximately 46 percent of buyers of the Terrain are women, which is more than 20 percentage points higher than the overall brand.
